Will Present Tomorrow

We are the Multicultural Club from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Astoria from Astoria, New York.  Our club is comprised of 30 young women from 6th to 11th grade. Every year, we host an Eco-Friendly Fashion Show.  Students from our school become the models of creative recyclable material dresses made by students and teachers and we, the Multicultural Club, decorate our school gym to depict a different theme each year.
This year we are very eager to invite you to our Third Annual Eco-Friendly Fashion Show. The purposes of these fashion shows are to bring awareness to our community concerning global warming and how recycling is the first step to preserving our green planet. This year, we have chosen the theme “fantasy” because of its portrayal in every culture.
This event will take place at the gym of our school. With the money earned from the fashion show, we plan on accomplishing several goals such as organizing a scholarship titled TYWLSA for TYWLSA, which will help assist a student enrolled at our school in financial need to pay for college. We are a small club in a small school; our 11th graders are preparing themselves to be the first graduating class of our school. All of our girls are now forming their lists of dream colleges to attend, however, the issue of money is a common obstacle in determining whether or not these “dreams” become a reality. To eliminate, or at least lessen the burden of the financial issue we believe that forming a scholarship within our school for our students will be the idealistic solution.

We hope to see you there!

This year, the Multicultural Club (MCC) and Dance My Culture (DMC) collaborated in order to bring to you spectacular dances.
A few of the girls took it upon themselves to learn dances from other cultures. They each embraced the different styles of dance, accepted it as their own, and worked together to create a final piece that embraced the diversity we have at TYWLS of Astoria.
The girls truly learned and represented what it means to be Multicultural.

Student's Experiences

“Dance My Culture gave us the courage to learn not to be afraid of going in front of a crowd of people and showing them what we love, our culture.”
-TYWLSA Dancers

“Wow! What an experience. Every time we dance our culture we understand more and more how unique and complex our dance is.”
-TYWLSA Dancers

“Well, we simply love dancing and to get the opportunity to share with our school and our community our traditional dances is really amazing for us. It is a great way to taste our culture.”
-TYWLSA Dancers

“Through dancing my culture, we feel as if we will not be judged. It is a form of expression. To come up with our moves we really used our imagination. We all worked together and learned from different cultural groups. In the end it was fun being able to perform our own dances, but also being able to work alongside other unique styles of dance.”
-TYWLSA Dancers

“How nice it was learning another culture and getting a chance to experience the feeling of learning something different than the usual thing we are exposed to at home. Learning about another culture shows how people are able to express themselves through dance, which can be  done in so many ways.”
-TYWLSA Dancers

“Our experience was amazing.  We acknowledge how people have differences but we learned to overcome them.  At the end we were able to show something that is fun and that we love.”
-TYWLSA Dancers

“Through practicing in this dance we feel proud of our culture, even if the dance consists of similar dance moves. We are able to show that sometimes uniformity is not always boring but instead it manages to bring us together.”
   -TYWLSA Dancers

We imagine the world as a better place if we all learn to celebrate other cultures by dancing their cultures.
